In December of 2008 the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive was proposed by the European Commission.  The European Parliament had an e-waste target of recovery at 85% set with the WEEE directive.  After several delays in initiating the WEEE directive it appears as if 2010 will be the key year in implementation.  Goals to move forward have been lowered however to 45% initially with an increase to 65% four years later.  To read more on the WEEE directive and impact information for EU countries read here http://www.eweekeurope.co.uk/news/eu-lowers-targets-for-new-e-waste-rules-23784

The State of California is struggling still to enforce the e-waste law passed in 2003. A watchdog group (CalWatchdog) released a report on March 31, 2010 stating that “many state agencies are apparently still throwing computers, television sets, radios, printers, copiers, radios and cell phones into the trash rather than putting them through special recycling efforts”.
